The body is overloaded with fats and sugar, which is converted into body fat. The second main cause is lack of exercise. A recent study shown in Diabetes week states that â€Å"kids in elementary schools spe nd an average of 22-24 hours a week watching television† (Weight Loss). Kids no longer spend their free time playing outside; instead they sit in a couch all day and watch TV or play video games. The danger in some rough neighborhoods can also add to the situation, because some parents do not feel that it is safe for their children to play outside. A third contributing factor is lack of awareness about good eating habits. Mothers give their children too much choices and too little guidance in what to eat, advertising confuses kids and leaves them debating whether a fast food product is good or bad for their health, and conflicting information about diets and healthy eating from the food industry and medical experts just makes them confused about diets. Fast-food joints have not only come to dominate the American landscape, they are also the most visible American export around the globe. Unfortunately, â€Å"fast food contains almost no nutrients and is loaded with added salt, sugar, refined flours, fat, and preservatives. †(Weight loss) The irony is that even though at the moment getting a meal from a fast food restaurant seems great, it’s not. For every dollar that is spent on fast food, and every second saved at a drive-through, over a lifetime it comes back and puts people at serious health risk. Obesity amongst children is a serious matter that goes beyond a child putting on a few pounds. It is an issue that has many health and social consequences, which often continue into adulthood. According to Su Shaoyong in his article Genetics and Obesity â€Å"obesity increases one’s risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, cancers, pulmonary disease, bone joint disorders, and early death. † (1) Obesity also often causes psychological problems. Many are judged on their appearance rather than their personality, meaning that people with obesity also suffer from discrimination and rejection by their peers. This ultimately causes poor self-image, which leads to low self-esteem. Meaning the greater the degree of obesity, greater the chance of suffering physical and psychological health problems. The good news is that there is no doubt that obesity can be prevented at an early age. Physical activity and inputting nutritional knowledge on kids are the main methods to preventing obesity. That should not be an excuse, being obese comes with several other problems. Why would any parent want to worry about their children having any type of health risks? Adults need to fulfill their jobs as being parents towards heir children, by being able to teach and show their kids how to live a healthy lifestyle. Doing a lot of small things for example limiting the amount of times they eat out at a fast-food restaurant or buying more fruits and vegetables instead of convenience foods that have a lot of fat in it can have a big impact on their child’s health. Racism And Prejudice In my eight grade at Earl warren, I witnessed numerous amounts of prejudice and racism. Not saying names about certain specific people but this said designated person is a female. I've known this girl since about the 2nd or 3rd grade so I know about her school life well enough to be able to tell this story. To my knowledge, I feel she grew up, at school, with a pleasant life as a young girl. She wasn't really known to be one of the prettiest girls, but I guess she could be considered a little sweet heart. As the years progressed, we already hit the fourth grade at Skyline Elementary School. School started off as a new-sprung and fresh start for her little life. Even though there was more to come in her new days, there was probably more that she would encounter that she would've ever expected. It kills me to still think about this, but older people in the 6th grade had already been introduced to smoking and drinking. This once pleasant girl had a rendezvous with her new coming future. As known to this day adolescent minds should not come to face with such horrors. She started to hang out with the older more mature kids a mature kids, how had better experience with the subject, which had caused her young, innocent mind to be penetrated beyond its boundaries to a new step in her life. While, the months and years proceeded by in a normal fashion her way of life confronted a huge U-turn. For instance, she started to dress in a gothic manner of wearing all dark and gloomy colors as if you changed into a totally different person. This came to conclude with major prejudices from our fellow classmates. I know how people thought in 5th and 6th grade and to people in that degree of age that was thought to be really weird. Kids just thought that because she wore constant black and glum colors that she was scary and dumb. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but saying someone is scary, mean, weird, and just not cool or normal just because the way the dress I think that leans toward being prejudice. These peculiar thoughts toward her continued throughout her elementary school years. She finally hit the 7th grade and once again she became involved with the older students, but for some reason know that she was hanging out with older people she was considered to be cool and popular. She stopped dressing the way she had before for a reason UN apparent to she and myself just came to be one of the most popular girls in our school. Other girls even started to act the way as the ways as she did. Through out the year she wasn't known to be one of the nicest girls she was actually kind of mean towards certain people. Finally the big 8th grade hit and since there were no older people to hang out with she finally decided to hang with people in her own grade. Through this period of time the drug abuse did not stop and neither did the drinking prospect. That year I was in her 8th grade English with her, designated in the seat right across from her. From undergoing her personal aspect I learned a surplus of knowledge of how she felt about different races of people. I don't know how she got this prejudice feeling toward this race of people, but she had a thing against Asians. She would call them chinks and other derogatory names and her reply to this consumption is that they should go back to their own countries. Seriously I really thought of that thought to be an appalling opinion coming from no reason once so ever. I think that she has gone through a bad life of prejudges and hate towards her and she back fired on it by using it as a scapegoat to blame all of her problems and past problems on this certain race. Or this could be just because she is really prejudiced and racist, or it could have been problems at home. But what I don't get, is why after her elementary school years of prejudicism toward her and hatred and commenting behind her back. That she would come back later in her life and judge a race from the way the look and act and just the way they are for hardly a good reason.

The SAT has used this scale since 2005, following its addition of the Writing section and essay. Forstudents in the class of 2014 who took the SAT, the average Critical Reading score was 497, average Math score was 513, and average Writing score was 487.Since colleges use the SAT as an admissions test, they typically share data on the average scores of their accepted students. While most colleges do not advertise an SAT score requirement, some admissions officers have suggested that they do not look at an application unless it contains a certain minimum score. Jeannette Rankin, First Woman Elected to Congress

Jeannette Rankin was a social reformer, woman suffrage activist, and pacifist who became the first American woman ever elected to Congress on November 7, 1916. In that term, she voted against U.S. entry into World War I. She later served a second term and voted against U.S. entry into World War II, becoming the only person in Congress to vote against both wars. Early Life Jeannette Pickering Rankin was born on June 11, 1880. Her father John Rankin was a rancher, developer, and lumber merchant in Montana.  Her mother, Olive Pickering, was a former school teacher. She spent her first years on the ranch, then moved with the family to Missoula. She was the oldest of 11 children, seven of whom survived childhood. Education and Social Work Rankin attended Montana State University at Missoula and graduated in 1902 with a degree in biology. She worked as a school teacher and  seamstress and studied furniture design,  looking for some work to which she could commit herself. When her father died in 1902, he left money to Rankin to be paid out over her lifetime. On a long trip to Boston in 1904 to visit her brother at Harvard, she was inspired by slum conditions to take up the new field of social work. She became a resident in a San Francisco Settlement House for four months, then entered the New York School of Philanthropy (which later became the Columbia School of Social Work). She returned to the west to become a social worker in Spokane, Washington, in a childrens home. Social work did not, however, hold her interest long—she only lasted a few weeks at the childrens home. Jeannette Rankin and Womens Rights Next, Rankin studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and became involved in the woman suffrage movement in 1910. Visiting Montana, Rankin became the first woman to speak before the Montana legislature, where she surprised the spectators and legislators alike with her speaking ability. She organized and spoke for the Equal Franchise Society. Rankin then moved to New York and continued her work on behalf of womens rights. During these years, she began her lifelong relationship with Katherine Anthony. Rankin  went to work for the New York Woman Suffrage Party, and in 1912, she became the field secretary of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Rankin and Anthony were among the thousands of suffragists at the 1913 suffrage march in Washington, D.C., before the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson. Rankin returned to Montana to help organize the states successful suffrage campaign in 1914. To do so, she gave up her position with the NAWSA. Working for Peace and Election to Congress As the war in Europe loomed, Rankin turned her attention to work for peace. In 1916, she ran for one of the two seats in Congress from Montana as a Republican. Her brother served as her campaign manager and helped finance the campaign. Jeannette Rankin won, though the papers first reported that she lost the election. Thus, Jeannette Rankin became the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first woman elected to a national legislature in any western democracy. Rankin used her fame and notoriety in this famous first position to work for peace and womens rights. She was also an activist against child labor and wrote a weekly newspaper column. Only four days after taking office, Jeannette Rankin made history in yet another way: she voted against U.S. entry into World War I. She violated protocol by speaking during the roll call before casting her vote, announcing I want to stand by my country, but I cannot vote for war. Some of her colleagues in NAWSA—notably Carrie Chapman Catt—criticized her vote, saying Rankin was opening the suffrage cause to criticism and it was impractical and sentimental. Rankin did vote later in her term for several pro-war measures, as well as working for political reforms including civil liberties, suffrage, birth control, equal pay, and child welfare. In 1917, she opened the congressional debate on the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, which passed the House in 1917 and the Senate in 1918. It became the 19th Amendment after it was ratified. But Rankins first anti-war vote sealed her political fate. When she was gerrymandered out of her district, she ran for the Senate, lost the primary, launched a third-party race, and lost overwhelmingly. After World War I After the war ended, Rankin continued to work for peace through the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom and also began working for the National Consumers League. At the same time, she worked on the staff of the American Civil Liberties Union. After a brief return to Montana to help her brother run—unsuccessfully—for the Senate, she moved to a farm in Georgia. She returned to Montana every summer, her legal residence. From her base in Georgia, Jeannette Rankin became Field Secretary of the WILPF and lobbied for peace. When she left the WILPF, she formed the Georgia Peace Society. She lobbied for the Womens Peace Union, working for an antiwar constitutional amendment. She left the Peace Union and began working with the National Council for the Prevention of War. She also lobbied for American cooperation with the World Court, for labor reforms, and for an end to child labor. In addition, she worked to pass the Sheppard-Towner Act of 1921, a bill she had originally introduced into Congress.  Her work for a constitutional amendment to end child labor was less successful. In 1935, when a college in Georgia offered her the position of Peace Chair, she was accused of being a Communist and ended up filing a libel suit against the Macon newspaper that had spread the accusation. The court eventually declared her, as she said, a nice lady. In the first half of 1937, she spoke in 10 states, giving 93 speeches for peace. She supported the America First Committee but decided that lobbying was not the most effective way to work for peace. By 1939, she had returned to Montana and was running for Congress again, supporting a strong but neutral America in yet another time of impending war.  Her brother once again contributed financial support for her candidacy. Elected to Congress, Again Elected with a small plurality, Jeannette Rankin arrived in Washington in January as one of six women in the House. At the time, there were two women in the Senate. When, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Congress voted to declare war against Japan, Jeannette Rankin once again voted no to war. She also, once again, violated long tradition and spoke before her roll call vote, this time saying As a woman, I cant go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else. She voted alone against the war resolution. She was denounced by the press and her colleagues, and barely escaped an angry mob. She believed that Roosevelt had deliberately provoked the attack on Pearl Harbor. After Second Term in Congress In 1943, Rankin went back to Montana rather than run for Congress again (and surely be defeated). She took care of her ailing mother and traveled worldwide, including to India and Turkey, promoting peace, and tried to found a womans commune on her Georgia farm. In 1968, she led more than five thousand women in a protest in Washington, DC, demanding the U.S. withdraw from Vietnam. She headed up the group calling itself the Jeannette Rankin Brigade. She was active in the antiwar movement and often invited to speak or be honored by the young antiwar activists and feminists. Jeannette Rankin died in 1973 in California.

The project will help us to understand and eventually treat more than 4,000 genetic diseases that affect mankind. The scientific products of the human genome project will include a resource of genomic maps and DNA sequence information that will provide detailed information about the structure, organization, and characteristics of human DNA, information that constitutes the basic set of inherited "instructions" for the development and functioning of a human being. The Human Genome Project began in the mid 1980's and was widely examined within the scientific community and public press through the last half of that decade. In the United States, the Department of Energy (DOE) initially, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) soon after, were the main research agencies within the US government responsible for developing and planning the project. By 1988, the two agencies were working together, an association that was formalized by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to "coordinate research and technical activities related to the human genome". Huck does not treat Jim like a slave when they traveled together, Huck treated Jim as a friend. Huck saw having a slave only as owning the person. Not actually being a slave to someone. Therefore, when he helps Jim runaway it would be like stealing. His conscience is telling him that Miss Watson, Jims master, never did anything wrong to him and that he shouldnt be doing anything wrong to her by helping Jim escape. Miss Watsons view is totally different from than Hucks perspective. Huck always disliked Miss Watson, but now that this society voice plays a part in Hucks judgment his views are changed. Societys view allows Huck to see Jim, a friend, only as a slave and Miss Watson, almost a foe in his young views, as a dear friend. Twain is showing the reader the injustices of slavery in this little story, as well as his moral opinion to slavery...
